The planet has suffered because of human greed. Consumer culture has resulted in the accumulation of material possessions that are suffocating our planet. With the destructive society we live in, feeling the need to constantly buy new products, millions of tons of fashion items are entering landfill. Current fashion industry practices are contributing to climate change. As a result, millions of animals are being displaced from their natural environments. With an infinite amount of existing materials, this collection, DISPLACED, was designed with recycled jeans, electrical waste and recycled PET bottles, creating a range that prevented post-consumer “waste” from being interred.
Upcycled denim was a signature for the collection as its longevity is rarely maximised and thus was given a second life. What would otherwise be deemed as waste has been DISPLACED to produce functional elements of the design such as handles and drawstrings. This displacement is further demonstrated using the broken phone cables to distort traditional bag shapes. The range of accessories utilises the functional components of the denim jeans to compliment design details which further reduces waste. The concept of reworked resources develops a relationship between the consumer and the former life of the raw materials, appreciating their source, placing value on their new form.
